Volunteer with The Water Well Project

The Water Well Project’s Volunteer Healthcare Professional is responsible for delivering The Water Well Project’s health education sessions to communities from migrant, refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds. This is important to improve the health literacy of these communities to facilitate better access to healthcare services and optimal health outcomes.
The Water Well Project sessions cover a range of health topics such as Navigating the Australian Healthcare System, Women’s Health, and Mental Health and Wellbeing. Sessions are highly interactive and utilise interpreting services where needed.
Key Responsibilities
Work with The Water Well Project team and other volunteer healthcare professionals to plan and facilitate interactive health education sessions (face-to-face, online or hybrid) with multicultural community groups. Liaise with community representatives to understand areas of interest regarding health topics to tailor sessions to each community group’s needs. Plan and prepare sessions in line with briefings from the Project Coordinator and the community representative. Provide feedback via evaluation surveys to enable The Water Well Project’s to continually develop and improve its program delivery. Engage in professional development opportunities offered from time to time.
Reporting
The role indirectly reports to the Health Education team. Support will be provided by The Water Well Project team including the Project Coordinator and Health Educators.
Eligibility
Qualifications in an AHPRA accredited healthcare discipline (exceptions apply). Demonstrates the organisation’s values and is passionate about improving the health outcomes and wellbeing of communities from migrant, refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds. Excellent communication and facilitation skills. Understands the Australian healthcare system and services. Ability to work alongside other volunteer healthcare professionals and The Water Well Project team. Has undertaken The Water Well Project’s New Volunteer Training A valid Working With Children Check (or State equivalent) and current AHPRA accreditation
Our Organisation
The Water Well Project is a not-for-profit organisation based in Melbourne. Our mission is to support the health and well-being of migrant, refugee, and asylum seeker communities by strengthening their health literacy. Our vision is that all communities from migrant, refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds achieve equitable access to health information and care.
The Water Well Project collaborates with partner organisations that support individuals from migrant, refugee, and asylum seeker backgrounds to develop culturally responsive and engaging health education sessions. Since its inception in 2011, The Water Well Project has delivered over 2,000 sessions across Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania in 40 different languages. We have over 300 active volunteers who are healthcare professionals (doctors, nurses, midwives, and allied health) who donate their knowledge and time to deliver health education sessions outside of their hours of paid professional work.
We also have a number of healthcare professional alumni, who no longer volunteer but continue to stay in touch and support The Water Well Project.
