V-Mainly Music Assistant

Music and playing in a band is synonymous with The Salvation Army, having had a long history of bringing the joy of music to worship and to the public. One of the many ways The Salvation Army engages the community through music is by providing its ‘Mainly Music’ program to children and young people - learning and participating in musical activities in a happy, caring, and pleasant environment. This program also unites participants through prayer, play, sharing meals, and companionship.

The role of the Mainly Music Assistant is to assist the Mainly Music Team Leader/Coordinator engage with parents and other carers by providing companionship, care and support, playing with children, choosing songs, singing, and playing musical instruments.

Key responsibilities

**Preparation ** Using your well-honed organisational skills, ensure space is prepared accordingly with refreshments, instruments and seating for parents and carers, and songs are chosen in advance and the audio-visual equipment is ready to go.

Facilitate session - under guidance of team leader/program supervisor lead parts of the Mainly Music group session with parents and children

During session – Create a friendly and engaging atmosphere by welcoming every participant, registering their attendance and offering refreshments. Provide companionship to parents and carers and engage their children in musical activities.

Safety and wellbeing – Always encourage safe and appropriate behaviour, gently guiding children and encouraging parents and carers to reinforce safe and appropriate behaviour. Ensure meal utensils, instruments and seating are cleaned and stored appropriately according to good manual handling practice.

Qualifications and skills (desired/required)

Experience in working with children
Interest in music and education A good understanding and commitment to the Christian faith

Time Required & Commitment

Mainly Music will be held on Monday mornings in Merimbula.

Ideally, volunteers will be able to commit to regular ongoing involvement to ensure consistent contact to build trust and rapport with children and their parents/carers.
