About The Bower Reuse & Repair Centre

The Bower is a social and environmental charity and cooperative committed to reducing landfill through reuse, repair and education. We operate across several locations in Sydney’s Inner West, providing the community with access to reclaimed building materials, refurbished furniture, and a variety of workshops designed to foster a sustainable, circular economy.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking dedicated volunteers to join our Marrickville team to assist with the organisation of reclaimed timber we recieve. This role is essential for managing the flow of reclaimed materials between our several locations and donors, ensuring that quality timber is saved from waste and prepared for a second life.

Key Duties

As a member of the Timber Resource Recovery Team, your primary responsibilities will include:

  1. Timber Processing: Deconstructing and breaking down large timber stock arriving from our Redfern site.

  2. Inventory Organization: Sorting processed timber by size, type, quality and pricing to ensure it is ready for resale.

  3. Stock Maintenance: Keeping the timber yard and building materials section organized, safe, and accessible for the public.

  4. Safe Handling: Moving and stacking heavy materials efficiently using proper manual handling techniques.

Skills and Experience Required

This is a hands-on, autonomous role. To be successful, you must have:

  1. Technical Independence: Proven experience operating power tools (saws, drills, etc.) safely without the need for constant supervision.

  2. Physical Fitness: The ability to perform manual labor and safely move heavy materials for the duration of your shift.

  3. Subject Matter Knowledge: A general understanding of timber and building materials to help identify saleable stock.

  4. Collaborative Mindset: While you will work independently on tasks, you will be a vital part of the broader Marrickville shop team.

The Impact & Benefits

By joining this team, you are at the front lines of the circular economy. Your work directly prevents valuable resources from entering the waste stream and makes affordable building materials accessible to the local community.

  1. Environmental Impact: Play a tangible role in Sydney’s waste reduction efforts.

  2. Community Connection: Work alongside a passionate team of staff and volunteers dedicated to sustainability.

  3. Skill Application: Use your existing trade or DIY skills in a meaningful, non-commercial environment.
