Volunteer Opportunity: Bric-a-Brac & Showroom Curator

The Bower is looking for a creative and organized volunteer to take the lead of our antique, vintage, Bric-a-Brac sections as well as our show room. This is a dynamic role where no two days are the same, as you’ll be working with a constantly evolving stream of unique pre-loved donations.

The Role

This position is about more than just shelving items; it’s about visual storytelling. You will be responsible for transforming a high volume of diverse donations into curated, inviting displays that inspire our customers to choose reuse over new. You will manage everything from the initial intake and cleaning to the final pricing and creative staging of our showroom.

Commitment: 0.5 to 1 day per week.

Location: The Bower's Marrickville Store in Addison Road Community Centre.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Curating & Merchandising: Designing and maintaining visually appealing displays for bric-a-brac, vintage, antique and unique collectibles.

  2. Stock Preparation: Cleaning and polishing incoming items to ensure they are presented in their best possible light.

  3. Research & Pricing: Assessing the value of diverse stock—from vintage curiosities to modern housewares and ensuring items are priced accurately for the shop floor.

  4. Space Management: Organizing the store showroom and surrounding shelving to maintain a safe, tidy, and easily shoppable environment.

Skills & Experience

  1. Visual Merchandising: Experience organizing stock and creating engaging displays (retail, gallery, or community sector experience is highly valued).

  2. Product Knowledge: A broad understanding of household goods, vintage items, or collectibles.

  3. Technical Savvy: Ability to research unfamiliar items online to determine fair market value and historical context.

  4. Detail-Oriented: A commitment to cleanliness and the "little things" that make a display stand out.

The Impact & Benefits

By curating our store, you will be transforming our "donations" into high value findds more likely to be rehomed. Your creativity directly supports the circular economy by making second-hand shopping a first-choice experience for our customers. You’ll be part of a vibrant, eco-conscious team and gain experience in unique stock management and boutique-style merchandising.
