Cooking Crew Leader

Each week our volunteer cooking teams (up to 4 volunteers) prepare meals for people in the community who may be experiencing homelessness, disadvantage, or simply doing it tough.

This position is an essential role – the backbone of what we are able to achieve behind the scenes preparing food while our service is closed for the days. Each cooking shift delivers up to 30 x 1:1 gastro trays of yummy food for the day and evening shifts to serve directly to guests. There is no direct customer interaction – meaning you can do what you do best in the kitchen!

The Cooking Crew Leader ensures our kitchen remains organised, our volunteers feel supported, and our guests receive nutritious meals prepared with care.

This role is ideal for someone who loves cooking, creating, organisation and teamwork, and would like to help ensure meals continue to be delivered consistently to those who rely on our service.

Key responsibilities

  • Supervise cooking shift and volunteers each Tuesday and Saturday
  • Key knowledge of food, food improvisation, and creative use of stock
  • Stock rotation that involves heavy lifting and transport stock up and down stairs
  • Ability to create yummy food and cook to safety standards
  • Support menu planning and meal coordination for cooking shifts
  • Assist with coordinating volunteer cooking teams
  • Help ensure meals include variety, protein and vegetarian options
  • Conduct basic stocktakes of pantry, fridge and freezer items
  • Prepare grocery orders based on stock levels and upcoming meals
  • Assist with organisation of the kitchen and food storage
  • Support food safety and kitchen procedures The role may also assist with coordinating food deliveries or donations, depending on availability.
