About Emergency Services at Australian Red Cross
For over 100 years, Australian Red Cross has supported communities through emergencies. Today, we continue that mission—helping people prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters. From frontline support to recovery services, our work makes a lasting difference across Australia.
Our volunteering opportunity
We’re looking for compassionate, reliable volunteers who are ready to support their communities when it matters most.
This is not a fixed-schedule role—emergencies don’t follow a timetable. Instead, you’ll be part of a trained team, ready to step in when needed, while still choosing when you’re available to volunteer.
Your role as an NSW Casual Recovery Volunteer
You’ll work locally in your community, helping people recover after emergencies by:
- Providing emotional and practical support to individuals and families
- Delivering Psychological First Aid in Recovery Centres
- Responding to enquiries and connecting people with relevant services and support agencies
- Supporting community recovery alongside local teams and partners
What makes a great Australian Red Cross volunteer
At Australian Red Cross, everything we do is guided by our Fundamental Principles—humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality. If these values resonate with you, you’ll feel right at home.
We’re looking for people who bring:
- Compassion and inclusivity – You genuinely care about others and are open to supporting people from all walks of life, even in emotionally challenging situations.
- Great communication skills – You listen with empathy and communicate clearly, helping people feel heard, understood, and supported.
- Sensitivity and respect – You approach every interaction with kindness and care, especially when people are experiencing distress.
- A team mindset – You enjoy working alongside others, contributing to a supportive environment, and continuously building your skills.
- Resilience and self-awareness – You understand the importance of self-care and can manage your wellbeing while supporting others.
- Confidence with basic technology – You’re comfortable using online systems for training, communication, and rostering.
Volunteering role compliance requirements
- Complete a National Police Check, which will be organised and fully funded by Australian Red Cross.
- Hold a current Working with Children Check, or willingness to apply for one. Australian Red Cross can support you through the application process and will reimburse the cost of this check.
If you’re someone who wants to make a difference and support others with empathy, respect, and care—we’d love to have you as part of our team.
