About the Role

Do you enjoy playing chess, cards, board games, or other social games? Are you looking for a meaningful way to give back to your community while making a real difference in someone's life?

Newcastle Meals on Wheels is seeking friendly and reliable volunteers to provide companionship to older people living in the Newcastle community. Many of our clients enjoy a game of chess, cards, or board games and would value spending time with someone who can share a game, a laugh, and a conversation.

This rewarding volunteer role helps reduce social isolation, promote wellbeing, and create meaningful connections for older members of our community.

Key Duties

  • Visit an older person in their home on a regular basis.
  • Play chess, cards, board games, or other games together.
  • Provide companionship and social interaction.
  • Engage in friendly conversation and build a positive relationship.
  • Support clients to remain socially connected and engaged.
  • Report any concerns regarding a client's wellbeing, health, safety, or welfare to Newcastle Meals on Wheels.
  • Follow organisational policies, procedures, and volunteer guidelines.

Skills and Experience Needed

No formal qualifications are required.

We are looking for volunteers who:

  • Enjoy playing chess, cards, or other games.
  • Are friendly, patient, and reliable.
  • Have good communication and listening skills.
  • Are respectful, caring, and inclusive of older people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Can commit to regular visits.
  • Are comfortable working independently after training and support.
  • Are willing to complete the required volunteer screening and induction processes.
