Reports to: Head of Policy, Advocacy and Communications; Volunteer Manager
Location: Hybrid (Sydney office and work from home)
Status: Volunteer (unpaid)
Commitment: Approximately one day per week (flexible), minimum six-month commitment preferred
About Jesuit Refugee Service Australia
Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) is an international Catholic organisation with a mission to accompany, serve and advocate for the rights of refugees, people seeking asylum, and other forcibly displaced people. JRS works in situations of greatest need, where people are most vulnerable, where there are gaps in services and where partnerships can be formed to better serve people seeking safety.
In Australia, JRS works to uphold the rights of refugees, people who are in the process of seeking asylum, and migrants in situations of vulnerability and aims to support people to empower themselves, to live meaningful and dignified lives while feeling welcomed and connected to a more fair and just community.
Our communications seek to amplify the voices of people with lived experience, build understanding within the community, promote the incredible work of our frontline teams, and advocate for policies that will improve the lives of the people we serve.
About the Role
Are you passionate about social media, content creation and using your skills for social impact?
We're looking for a creative and organised Digital and Social Media Volunteer to help bring JRS Australia's stories, campaigns and events to life across our digital channels.
Working closely with the Head of Policy, Advocacy and Communications, you'll transform photos, videos and key messages into engaging social media content, create eye-catching graphics and help grow our online presence.
This is an excellent opportunity for a university student or emerging communications, marketing or design professional looking to build practical experience while contributing to meaningful work supporting refugees and people seeking asylum.
Key Responsibilities
Social Media Content
· Create and schedule social media posts using Buffer across Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn
· Turn photos, videos and short content briefs into engaging social media posts
· Draft captions that reflect JRS Australia's voice, values and messaging
· Help maintain the social media content calendar and ensure content is published on schedule
Design and Content Creation
· Design social media graphics, carousels and digital assets using Canva
· Adapt existing templates to create campaign materials, event promotions and article graphics
· Develop creative ideas for communicating advocacy messages, fundraising appeals and organisational updates
Photography and Video
· Attend selected JRS events to capture photos and short videos for social media
· Identify opportunities to create engaging content, including reels and behind-the-scenes moments
· Organise and upload visual content for future use
Campaign Support
· Assist in creating coordinated suites of social media content for campaigns, events and appeals
· Contribute creative ideas that help increase engagement and reach
Additional Opportunities (depending on experience)
Volunteers with additional skills may also have the opportunity to:
· update website content using WordPress
· assist with basic marketing and communications projects
· monitor social media performance and suggest improvements
· contribute to longer-form digital storytelling and blog content
Skills and Experience
Essential
· Confidence using Canva to create engaging social media graphics
· Familiarity with social media platforms, particularly Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn
· Strong written communication skills and attention to detail
· Ability to work independently while taking direction and feedback
· Creativity, organisation and reliability
· Interest in human rights, social justice, and/or refugees and people seeking asylum
. Ability to adhere to policies in relation to code of conduct, boundaries and confidentiality
Desirable
· Experience using Buffer or another social media scheduling platform
· Experience with WordPress
· Marketing, communications or graphic design studies or experience
· Photography or short-form video editing skills
· Experience creating Instagram Reels or other short-form video content
