Evergreening Global Alliance (EGA) is seeking skilled volunteers to support the development and management of restoration data, databases, digital monitoring systems and decision-support tools.

This opportunity is suited to professionals, researchers and technical specialists with at least two years' experience in data management, database development, digital systems, monitoring or related fields who would like to contribute their expertise to meaningful international projects.

Volunteers will help EGA and its partners collect, organise, analyse, visualise and communicate information about landscape restoration, sustainable agriculture, biodiversity, livelihoods and climate resilience.

Volunteer Activities

Depending on skills and availability, volunteers may contribute to:

• Designing and maintaining databases for restoration projects and programs
• Establishing systems for collecting, storing and managing field and monitoring data
• Developing digital forms and mobile data-collection tools using platforms such as KoboToolbox, ODK or Survey123
• Integrating field, survey, project-management and geospatial datasets
• Developing data standards, metadata, data dictionaries and quality-control procedures
• Cleaning, validating, organising and documenting restoration-related datasets
• Creating interactive dashboards, maps and reporting systems
• Automating routine data-processing and reporting workflows
• Supporting the development of restoration monitoring and results-management platforms
• Designing systems for tracking restoration areas, participating households, interventions and project outcomes
• Developing indicators and digital tools for monitoring ecological and socioeconomic outcomes
• Supporting data analysis for donor reports, project proposals, evaluations and technical publications
• Improving interoperability between EGA’s databases, GIS platforms and organisational systems
• Developing protocols for data security, privacy, access, sharing, backup and archiving
• Preparing user guides, technical documentation and standard operating procedures
• Reviewing emerging digital technologies that could improve restoration planning, delivery and monitoring

Essential qualifications and experience

• At least two years of relevant experience in data management, information systems, digital monitoring, database development, software development or a related field
• A relevant qualification or equivalent practical experience
• Experience designing or managing structured databases
• Strong data-cleaning, organisation and quality-assurance skills
• Experience using data-analysis, visualisation or reporting tools
• Ability to document systems and explain technical processes clearly
• Ability to work independently and deliver agreed outputs
• Commitment to EGA’s restoration and climate-resilience mission

Desirable technical skills - experience with one or more of the following would be advantageous:

• Power BI, Tableau, Looker Studio or similar dashboard platforms
• KoboToolbox, ODK, Survey123 or other mobile data-collection systems
• Excel, Access, SharePoint, Airtable or other information-management platforms
• SQL and relational database management
• PostgreSQL/PostGIS or other spatial databases
• Python, R, JavaScript or comparable programming languages
• QGIS, ArcGIS, Google Earth Engine etc
• Application programming interfaces and automated data integration
• Cloud-based data storage and collaboration platforms
• Web or mobile application development
• Monitoring, evaluation and learning systems
• Restoration, forestry, agriculture, biodiversity, carbon or climate-related datasets

Volunteer arrangements

• Location: Remote (possible hybrid or project-based assignments)
• Duration: 3-6 months, with possible extension by mutual agreement
• Time commitment: Approx. 8–12 hours per week, depending on the assignment
• Supervision: Each volunteer will have an EGA contact person and an agreed workplan
• Outputs: Any activities or agreed contributions will be discussed and documented before the volunteer assignment commences.
