About us

Merri-bek is one of Melbourne's most multicultural municipalities — a third of residents born overseas, more than 140 languages spoken at home. But mainstream retail stocks a narrow slice of what our community actually cooks with. We built Merri Food Hub to not only fill this gap, but to embed equity, build a more resilient food system, and build community. We are committed to providing the same good produce for everyone who shops with us, with dignity and choice built in through the Journey Box Project.

Merri Food Hub is community-run, staffed by local volunteers who are led by a very small team of part-time paid staff. We are stocked by local (as local as we can get!) growers and makers, and shaped by the people who shop with us.

We generate revenue through three channels: our Wednesday market at Glenroy Community Hub, our Friday market at Fawkner, and our online shop. Everything we do is guided by the four betters: better production (backing local, sustainable growers), better nutrition (fresh, culturally relevant produce sold up to 20% cheaper than major supermarkets), a better environment (short supply chains, composted or redistributed surplus), and a better life, leaving no one behind (fair pay, subsidised Journey Boxes, and Community Days that bring Merri-bek's local groups together).

About you

We need a bookkeeper across our full cash cycle:

• managing accounts receivable and payable
• reconciling bank and Square transactions for two weekly cash markets
• reconciling online shop orders
• reconciling market takings and float
• keeping the general ledger current
• preparing BAS and GST lodgements, once registered
• producing regular financial reports for the Principal and board

Given the volume of cash handling and supplier variety, accuracy and a system-minded approach matter — Xero experience is expected (Square preferred), not-for-profit or community-sector bookkeeping experience is a strong plus, and comfort working alongside volunteers and a lean back-office team is essential.
