INTRODUCTION

Safe Steps is the only 24/7, family violence response centre in Victoria, providing a “state-wide entry point” for victim-survivors of domestic and family violence. Services include information and referral, crisis response, specialist family violence risk assessment, safety planning, Webchat, and access to supported crisis accommodation.

Our vision is safety, support and respect for all victim-survivors of domestic and family violence. 

Our practice is trauma-informed and guided by evidence. We provide services to all victim-survivors and recognise that most of our work is dedicated to the needs of women and children which reflects the gendered nature of domestic and family violence.

THE ROLE

Safe Steps is seeking members to join our Lived Experience Advisory Group (LEAG).

This paid volunteer opportunity is open to survivor advocates and people with lived experience of family and domestic violence, including sexual assault. As a LEAG Member, you will provide valuable insight and advice to ensure the voices of victim-survivors are embedded in the design, delivery, evaluation and continuous improvement of Safe Steps services, systems and policies.

The role offers a meaningful opportunity to influence positive change while contributing to a safer and more responsive service system for victim-survivors.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

As a LEAG Member, you will:

• Share lived experience insights to inform service delivery, policy and practice development.
• Participate in advisory group meetings, consultations and discussions.
• Review and provide feedback on policies, procedures, communications and service initiatives.
• Contribute to service design, evaluation and continuous improvement activities.
• Help Safe Steps strengthen its response to victim-survivors.
• Complete required training and comply with organisational policies and procedures.

Time Commitment

• Approximately 3 hours per quarter
• Quarterly meetings (2 hours) plus preparation time (approximately 1 hour)
• Meetings are primarily held online, with occasional in-person opportunities available

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

• Lived experience of family and domestic violence, including sexual assault, or experience as a survivor advocate.
• Ability to share lived experience safely and constructively while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
• Ability to identify broader themes and opportunities for service and system improvement.
• Strong communication skills and confidence contributing to group discussions.
• Ability to work collaboratively and respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
• Alignment with Safe Steps' mission, values and Code of Conduct.
• Current Working with Children Check and National Police Check.
